>Environment:
Tyan S2466, BIOS v4.05, GDT-PCI ICP Vortex RAID v6.08B, Sony CDU5211 CD-ROM (EIDE), 2.0Gb RAM, AMD MP2000+ CPU (1), Broadcom 10/100/1000baseTX PCI NIC
>Description:
Can boot and partition the disk, however, on attempting to configure either the on-board NIC or the Broadcom NIC, no network traffic can be passed (but DHCP is successfull...).
Attempted CD-ROM(RW) install and on the first package "unpack" I get:
Command: pax -zrpe -O -f /mnt2//i386/binary/sets/kern-GENERIC.tgz
Press any key to continue
-----------------------------------------------------------------
gzip: stdin: Invalid argument
pax: End of archive volume 1 reached
pax: Sorry, unable to determine archive format.
On testing with a manual mount of the CD to /mnt2:
#mount /dev/cd0d /mnt2
#pax -zrpe -O -f /mnt2//i386/binary/sets/kernel-GENERIC.tgz
cd0(pciide0:1:0): illegal request, data = 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00
#
On mounting the CD-RW on a different PC, the file is readable and extractable with tar -zxvf.
Attempts at troubleshooting:
Re-burn the ISO image at 4x on non-RW media
Move the CD-ROM from PRI to SEC on the IDE bus
Disable auto-detect for anything _except_ the plugged in device
Enable/Disable 32-bit and DMA (e.g., +32bit+DMA, +32bit-DMA, -32bit+DMA, etc.)
Change IRQ and DMA channel settings as the BIOS allowed, one boot/test per change for IDE controller, SCSI-RAID controller and NIC controller (about 26 boots, give or take a few).
Upgrade/downgrade BIOS from Tyan, all flavors still published from 4.02 to 4.05 were installed and tested.
>How-To-Repeat:
Install into a similar system with a newer CD-ROM and EIDE controller.
