For remapping special keys like backspace and delete you can create a
configuration file with lesskey. less will look for this file and use
it for remapping if present. However, the manpage mentions that on NetBSD
less will look in /etc/less.sys. This was changed some time ago but the
manpage wasn't correct. less looks for /etc/sysless.
