Information is not available as we can't even get to the point of being able to issue a "uname -a" command.

Whether the installation of NetBSD/i386 1.6.1 is started by using a bootable CDROM or the relevant 1.44MB boot floppy images, the same thing appears on the screen after the "device probing" stage has apparently finished (here are the last few lines):

At this point, the process hangs, with no further messages and no Main Menu Install Screen (sysinst).  This is why it isn't possible to issue any commands to get further information.

The machine in question is Intel based, with the following specifics:
- Gigabyte GA-8S648FX motherboard
- Intel Celeron 2.4GHz processor
- 512MB PC3200 DDR memory
- 80GB Western Digital ATA/100 Hard Disk Drive

I don't know whether this is enough information, and am happy to provide anything else required.

In case it is of any value at all, both Windows XP and Slackware Linux 9.1 are installed and run on this machine, and both report the Western Digital HDD as operating in Ultra DMA Mode 5.  However, FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE seems to exhibit the same problem as NetBSD during installation, in that the system hangs and never gets to the inital Installation Screen.
