when attempting to compress already-compressed files,
(strictly speaking, files with one of the particular suffixes)
our gzip(1) behaves differently from GNU's. see below.

% touch a.gz b.bz2 c.Z
% gzip a.gz b.bz2 c.Z
and see the GNU version warns and skips files
while ours compresses them.
