browsing the bug report database for vnd-related issues I found this PR.

All what I see here looks normal behavior to be. The device being shown
in vnconfig -l is the device where the file attached to the vnd reside.
You can't mount vnd0a probably because the 'a' partition of the vnd
doesn't exists. Try 'disklabel vnd0' to see which partition exists, and
try mounting /dev/vnd0d.
