 This is reproducable on sparc64 when my switch and interface are forced to
 half-duplex.  So, david's guess (on current-users) about the MAC needing to
 be placed in a half-duplex compatible mode is probably right.
 
 I can look at this, but it will be a few days before I'll have time.
