 Can you try booting install-tiny?
 or maybe one of the small, ramdisk-free kernels?
 (they should get as far as failing to find init)
 
 Might also be worth rebuilding /boot with DEBUG_MEMSIZE defined
 (for src/sys/arch/i386/stand/lib/getextmemx.c)
