After using the ath0 card, that is a
Netgear WG511T       AR5212    CardBus    b/g
for a while (<1 hour) the kernel prints the msg:
ath0: ath_rx_proc: no mbuf

No data is furthermore transmitted as this happens.

The network configuration has to be restarted, then it works again
for some time.
