 Something else I tested:
 
 inserting the following line into pf.conf while keeping the interfaces'
 MTU at 1500:
 
     scrub all random-id max-mss 1456
 
 I figured out 1456 as the value at which the transfer suddenly works.
 1457 is not OK.
 
 Does this ring a bell for anyone?
