The installation instructions (ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-3.0.1/sun3/INSTALL.html) state: or if you have already decompressed the miniroot ... dd if=miniroot.gz of=/dev/rsd0b obs=32k. The .gz suffix should be removed (as the miniroot has already been decompressed). I also note that NetBSD 1.5.3 used miniroot.gz, but NetBSD 3.0.1 uses miniroot.fs.gz, so additionally there are six other total places in the document that should change miniroot to miniroot.fs / miniroot.gz to miniroot.fs.gz
