the problems with hangs and panics that you describe may be fixed by
my recent changes in PR 32535.  do you still see any of those problems
with a more recent -current?

(for the pkgsrc problems, please open a separate PR for those if they
still exist... having one PR for such unrelated problems doesn't work too well.)
