Out of curiosity, I tried to vary the flags provided to msync(2) to no
effect. Since the code subsequently does an munmap(), I decided to
comment out the msync() calls entirely with the same effects but
with the time spent in break(2) instead.
Note that this is on a not-very-current -current.
