This workaround seems to help.  It's essentailly the same workaround as
I used years ago when inserting a USB disk would often fail due to lack
of memory.

    for i in $(jot 10) ; do
      dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null bs=16m count=400 &
    done
    wait
