 I successfully built an amd64 -current kernel today, and yes, uhmodem 
 does recognize my huawei e156 modem. I found an ubsa problem related to 
 it, but could not report it yet due to lack of connectivity. Once in 8 
 times I plugged the modem in, I had a kernel crash, but again could not 
 report due to lack of connectivity. Will try to do so as soon as 
 possible, but I am on my way out for a trip.
 
 Yes, including uhmodem in GENERIC config is part of the solution. ;)
