I haven't checked which change fixed this, but as there have been
several acpi changes, I tried again, and all is well with a kernel
from yesterday's source:

  com0 at acpi0 (UAR1, PNP0501-1): io 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4
  com0: ns16550a, working fifo
  com0: console

(so this bug may be closed)
