Simply, typing startx (without an xorg.conf, as with one X11 wouldn't
start anymore lately, probably an unrelated bug), but all I got was a
blank screen with no windows, no mouse cursor either. With or without
an .xinitrc it was the same, like if it was simply freezing... also, I
couldn't anymore switch back to text mode (either by ctrl-alt-Fn or
ctrl-alt-backspace) and had to power down the system. Fortunately,
when pressing the software power button the system could come down
cleanly, though, so apart from video issues the system wasn't frozen.

I'll try this today, thanks for the suggestion.
I've been wondering if anything might try to dynamically load a module
with expat dependency which would now be failing... So a next step
would be to try with a copy of the expat libraries
under /use/X11R7/lib/, that'll be my second test.
