this implies that the ati driver is not built with KMS enabled.
i would install the ati7 pkgsrc driver (pkgsrc/x11/xf86-video-ati
not pkgsrc/x11/xf86-video-ati6, though the former used to have
ati6 in it of course.)
alternatively hack the ati6 drive to enable KMS. i had to patch
the xsrc version fairly significantly to make it properly work,
it might be worth investigating those changes if you want to use
ati6 driver:
