Hi!
For future reference, this issue can be summarized as follows:
with old Xorg (1.10.x) and vesa driver, X will perform very badly:
running `su` will take ~1 minute, when X is running.
with new Xorg (1.18.x) and vesa driver, X itself performs fine, killing
X results in the same performance problem: running `su` will take ~1
minute. (this is pkgsrc Xorg)
In my case, I am able to use the nouveau driver, so I do not experience
the problem. Only change was the choice of driver.
I was running Xorg badly (specifying BusID in xorg.conf.d).
Having working nouveau is even better than having vesa fixed!
Left details in case anyone else has this problem.
