On the contrary, this is exactly the kind of situation that the
patches in pkgsrc are for.

If they are using /dev/kmem (or equivalently, libkvm) that is purely
an accident.
However, if so they ought to work when recompiled for NetBSD 7.x, so
probably something else is going on.
