Managed to stop the crashes and get X11 running by disabling DRI
acceleration & specifying the resolution for each mode manually.
Unfortunately though X11 is running, graphics start off corrupted and
the screen fades out. Pressing ctrl-d terminates X11 and the system
returns back to a working console (it wouldn't do that before, console
would stay pitch black).
