 I updated my test box to -current as of yesterday, 10.99.11.
 This includes major updates to X from the recent weeks.
 
 With this version, the scenario doesn't reproduce the problem.
 That makes the issue rather moot, unless somebody wants to somehow find
 out which change made the difference.
