Because mtools is much nicer when you are doing minimal file copies to
a dos diskette (because you don't need to mount the drive, copy files,
and then umount).  

I did get mtools working fine with NetBSD-1.0 using the FreeBSD patches
in their ports directory.  Look on ftp.freebsd.org in 
/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/ports to find what they've done.  Their ports
stuff will ftp and compile packages for you if you get their bsd*port*mk 
stuff and put it in /usr/share/mk.  You also need a copy of ncftp to do
the automatic ftping.
