I use mgetty-0.23 which not only solves the problem but:
a) abandons the old AT&T idea that modems have to be dumb, knows that they
are smart and treats them that way,
b) does fax in and fax out as well
c) does voice also(!)
I got 0.23 from ftp.leo.org. Is there a N. American site that mirrors the
Beta releases?
Summary: mgetty gets 5 stars. Excellent work by Gert Doering, Klaus
Weidner and, I understand, many others...
