Cdrecord works with ATAPI drives for about a year.
Implement a driver that behaves exactly as a SCSI driver (important
is the SCIOCCOMMAND ioctl) and use cdrecord-1.6.1a1 which allows to
specify dev=/dev/cd0:0,0 if you don't like to create the /dev/scgx link.
Cdrecord then will run out of the box with all ATAPI drives except
the Sony CDU-928
