It appears that I faked myself out.  It turns out that I have NetBSD1.4
running instead of 1.4.1.  I reverted from a 1.4.1 installation to a 1.4
installation by copying files.  This would be consistant with your observation
below concerning 1.4. Sorry about the confusion.
