I have the name servers for my ISP included in my netbsd box's resolver. I
route through the Netbsd box to my ISP using ppp, and all seems to work.

Why not? How is the gateway supposed to resolve dns names? Of course,
if the gateway were also a nameserver, then _all_ the hosts should
point to it.
