Sounds like you don't have a valid /etc/resolv.conf. It should look like:
search <domain_name>
nameserver <ip_addr>
where <domain_name> is the domain name you're in, and <ip_addr> the IP adress
of a DNS server from your provider (you can have several nameserver lines).
