First use disklabel to install a label on the disk:
disklabel wdx > toto
vi toto
inside vi, create a new partition (for example 'a') as big as 'd'
and remplace "unused 0 0" with "4.2BSD 0 0 0"
disklabel -rR wdx toto
now you should be able to use partition a of your new disk:
newfs /dev/rwdxa
