Hi again,
I'm having a little trouble getting the modem set up. It is an internal ISA
modem with a Rockwell R6759-21 chipset. The chip furthermore says "9739
B301199-4". I've looked it up and this should translate to a RCV336ACF/SVD
modem, if that's any help. It has jumpers with which I can ajust the IRQ and
port. I've looked in the Linux/Modem compatibility knowledge base
(http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html) and did find a "OK" entry of
a modem with the same chipset.
The big question is: can this thing (in theory) work under NetBSD? I haven't
gotten it to work, but that can be totally due to my lack of experience. Or
shouldn't I even try and just buy an external modem (which are more
expensive)?

Hmm, that didn't work out the way I hoped it would. I'm having trouble
finding docs on this. I think that the FreeBSD and Linux documentation is
more elaborate than that of NetBSD (no flame intended; the OS is better
though!).
Here's what I've got (mind the many questionmarks). I guess first I need to
know about the com-ports:
com0 at isa0 port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4: ns16550a, working fifo
com1 at isa0 port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3: ns8250 or ns16450, no fifo
The modem is jumpered to be COM1 (com0 in NetBSD) and IRQ4. Furthermore
there is no entry in dmesg that could be related to the modem (AFAI can
see). I don't see any IRQ-conflicts. If all was well, there would be a line
which identifies the modem, right? If that would be the case I should do a
"sh MAKEDEV tty00" in "/dev", right? And then use "cu -l tty00" to try to
talk to the thing? If that worked I could proceed in the Hylafax install. I
think...
As you can see: total modem-newbie (but willing to learn).

Thanks Jeremy, good guide. BTW, Hylafax documentation also is quite good
(which I found out by actually reading it ;) ).
Greets,
