OK, so I examined the manual and found the flexport doesn't have an irq 8!

So...I changed the kernel back to irq 5, changed the jumper on the board
back to irq 5, moved the internal soundcard to another irq and now it
hangs at "Setting tty flags".

Anyone else have any ideas?
