Dumb newbie question #987
Can do this...
# smbclient -L WIN98-MACHINE
...and get results. But when I do this...
# smbclient -L localhost
...I get "(Connection refused) because nmbd
is not running. So I check like this...
# netstat -a | more
...I don't see LISTEN for netbios-ssn like the
DIAGNOSIS.txt says I should. So I checked up
on port 138 like this...
# cat /etc/services | grep 139
netbios-ssn 139/tcp
netbios-ssn 139/udp
#
...and I searched through /etc/inetd.conf to
make sure I hadn't called nmbd or smbd from
there. And I check /var/log/log.nmb and get
this bad news...
Get-Hostbyname: Unknown host
...but my /etc/hosts file is fine for localhost
and also okay between the NetBSD Samba server and
the Win98 machine because I can ping both ways. It
was my understanding that I didn't need DNS running
for this level. My ping works for localhost by name
and for the NetBSD to itself by name. Now I'm
kinda stumped.
So...where do I look next?
