What worked for me on Samba for NetBSD...
Posted for those who search the list, so they won't
have to read every last msg of my newbie trials and
errors. Here's what worked for Samba from the complete
Wasabi 4-CD set of NetBSD 1.5 after a pkg_add of
binaries onto a ThinkPad 380Z (port-i386).
------------- Symptoms of problem --------------
This was for a small home network of just two PC's, a
Gatway Solo 5150SE running Win98 and the ThinkPad
running NetBSD 1.5.
I already had TCP/IP working. I could ping from both to
each other, and to themselves. Ping worked both by IP
and by name (STURNO1, STURNO2). But every time I tried to
do this...
# nmbd -D
...the daemon died. I knew that it had died because when
I did this...
# ps -xa | grep mbd
#
...I got no mention of nmbd. Note: sometimes the "grep
for mbd", would list, but never the nmbd daemon itself.
------------- Cure for problem --------------
To get Samba going, besides what was in the tutorials
and books "Samba for Dummies" and "Using Samba" (unless I
had missed them) I had also to do this...
# vi /etc/myname
...and make one line "STURNO1" which is the name
of the NetBSD box on my local Ethernet (STURNO2 is the
name of my Win98 machine on my local Ethernet). Then
I had to do this...
# hostname `cat /etc/myname`
...then I had to get SWAT going via the Win98 machine by
entering...
http://192.168.1.7:901
...into Netscape on the Win98 box on my local Ethernet
(I had to use the Win98 box because my package binary
installation of KDE from the 4-CD Wasabi NetBSD 1.5 set
was too old for KDE to have Konqueror and I got KFM
errors so that KFM would not connect to SWAT.) So then I
set everything Global to defaults, and commited them.
Then I started smbd and nmbd from the SWAT status screen
(on the Win98 Netscape SWAT screen) and the SWAT status
screen immediately reported this...
nmbd running
smbd running
...so that fixed it! Hurray!!!
Much gratitude to all (especially to Manuel Bouyer and
Thomas Wanka) for their patience and gracious assistance!
Thanks,
