or
ifconfig -a
should tell you which device your network card is, eg. ex0, fxp0, ne0 etc.
Say you manually set it with
ifconfig ex0 inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 0xffffff00
Then, create /etc/ifconfig.ex0 containing "inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 0xffffff00"
