I remember that I had this problem, too. In my case, it was caused by
an alias ls='ls -F' that was set even for non-interactive shells.

Fortunately, that is easy to solve:

alex@abc:~$ cat /netbsd/home/alex/.bashrc
case "$-" in *i*)
        PS1='\[\e[1m\]\u@\h:\w\$\[\e[0m\] '
        alias ll='ls -l'
        alias ls='ls -F'
        ;;
esac

This will set the aliases for interactive shells only.
