The problem, of course, was solved shortly after posting:
If I ask audiorecord to use a named port ("-p line" for example),
it does not work. But if I have audioctl use a numeric port
number for recording (0x4), this appears to work much better.
At least, that's how it seems so far. I assume that if that's
correct, then it's a driver (or audiorecord) bug.
