helpful because I'm absolutely new to NetBSD.

That were good news: I updated XFree86-servers with "make update" in
/usr/pkgsrc/x11/XFree86-server (I had already downloaded all the
sources in the distfiles with my old modem). It worked fine.
The bad news: Even in XFree86 4.4.0, the trident-driver gives a messy
screen. Finally, I've found some patches on
http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/. But the link to the 4.4.0-patches are
dead. Only the links to 4.3.0. work.
Well, well, well. I think this trident-driver decided just to drive me
crazy.
