After far more time than I wish I had spent, I finally (think) I
have sendmail working completely, both for local and remote mail
delivery. The final thing required to get local mail working was
to add
sendmail: 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255
to /etc/hosts.allow. (I have no idea why it would forward mail to
a smart relay without sendmail being in hosts.all, but that's
rather an aside).
The only remaining item is emptying /var/spool/clientmqueue.
sendmail -Ac -q0 was having no effect.
After some poking around, I discovered:
cwr@achilles$sendmail -Ac -bp
/var/spool/clientmqueue is empty
Total requests: 0
which is baffling to me, given
cwr@achilles$ls /var/spool/clientmqueue/

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? (I really do hope to stop
sending questions about sendmail stuff, very, very soon :) ).
Thanks,
Chris
