Ok, here are the details... this is on a Dell 1100 inspiron
laptop. This is running NetBSD 2.0, and I have changed the kernel
but not by much. I applied the patch in kern/28086 which fixes
a bug in the ubsa.c usb belkin serial port code (I applied one
line only, see my post on that PR) and kern/25659 which patches
wdc.c to delay the wd indentification for slower devices.
I also commented out the wdc0 and wdc1 devices.
I wonder if that is what is happening on this, as the zip 100,
superdisk are all slower devices, compared to the laptop.

Need more info. NetBSD level, your full dmesg messages (the ... is
important), your kernel config if you recompiled, etc.
