As Jeremy already pointed out, this is not the format that 
/etc/master.passwd looks like, have a close look at what vipw prints for 
you.

Then, personally, I don't use this old "compat" syntax and just put 
"passwd: files nis" into /etc/nsswitch.conf and call it good (no +-line in 
passwd at all). Works fine! :)
