The stable branch only has pullups for security issues and some important
build issues. (A new stable branch is done every three months.) Current
has very frequent changes.

No. pkgsrc is portable enough to run on various NetBSD versions as well as
several other operating systems.

If it is production you may want to use the latest stable branch as you
may have less and easier updates.
