I have had good luck with a Dell PERC5/i (LSI) SATA/SAS RAID controller
in a whitebox system running various AMD-64 -current. The MB is an ASUS
A8N32-SLI Deluxe.

The controller enumerates as mfi(4) however the driver makes the
controller show as a SCSI controller.
