Look at /usr/X11R6/include/X11/cursorfont.h. And then use xsetroot.
Examples:
xsetroot -cursor_name shuttle
or
xsetroot -cursor_name spider
Or you make your own bitmap -- see manual pages for xsetroot (-cursor) and
bitmap.
