the prefix "mega-" means 1000000, or at least it did before all the
binary computer folks came in and redefined it to 1048576 as a
convenience.

hence the IEC has proposed mebi, kibi, gibi and tebi to be used when
referring to powers of two.  they sound kind of silly, but at least if
people started using these terms there would be no chance of confusion
between powers of 10 and two.

but I digress.
