I don't make the rules! ;-)
I don't think the problem is having '/usr/pkg/lib' in ld.so.conf,
I think that shared library management through '/etc/ld.so.conf'
is the problem. It is apparently something that was added to the
ELF spec and (according to the FAQ below) has numerous disadvantages...

In pkgsrc, most packages are built to properly pass runtime
path information on to the linker.
