  I was happy with the T61 too--(Radhika,) on 4.0 even--until the
drive failure (but since it's within its 1yr warranty, I'm hopeful
all will work out fine).  I'd tried i386 and amd64, by the way, and
mainly stuck with i386.  The performance difference was minimal,
plus i386 already had partial speedstep support (i.e., I could set
processor speed to "low" and observe a drop in power consumption).

  Anyway, (Steve,) thanks for all the insights; in particular, the
Apr 12th kernel and the "build-and-hold / delayed deploy" -current
strategy.
