change boot timeout

Hello,

How do I change the boot chooser timeout?  At boot my system displays
'NetBSD/i386 ffsv1 Primary Bootstrap' so I tried 'installboot -e -o
timeout=1 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv1' but that doesn't change anything.  

Also, is it possible to hide all the startup messages?  I'm running NetBSD
4.0.
