No space left on device / io errors

My machine running NetBSD 6.0 BETA 2 hung 2/3 times when following
messages could be seen with dmesg:

umass0: BBB reset failed, IOERROR
umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, IOERROR
umass0: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, IOERROR

Above 3 messages repeated a few times, followed by:

Most of the commands just gave Input/Output error

System shutdown by pressing power button or typing shutdown did not work.
So it had to be powered off.

On reboot it went for file system checks and then functioned smoothly for
some time and above symptoms recurred.


Does it sound like the disk has gone bad? Any other possibilities?
