group file line length

On a pair of 6.1_STABLE systems, one i386 and one amd64, with the same 
/etc/group file.  One group line is currently 670 characters long.
getgroupmembership() reads the line on the i386 system but skips it on the 
amd64.  From a bit of cutting and pasting is seems that the max line 
length that will be read on amd64 is around 512 while on i386 it gets up 
to about 700.  On both systems GETGR_R_SIZE_MAX is 1024, so whats going on 
here?
