This doesn't answer the question.

"Don't mess up with the installation" is one thing,
"read-only file system" (like on live CD) is completely different one.
It looks like you don't see this very important difference.

This doesn't answer the question either.

"Without committing to a permanent installation" makes no sense at all
unless we're discussing burning NetBSD into PROM.

"Without committing to installation to internal HDD" is completely
different thing. Using a system that is installed to USB-attached storage,
be it pen drive or external HDD, or installed to SD or CF card (perhaps
used via USB card reader) satisfies this requirement perfectly.
