maximum number of raidframe devices

What limits the maximum number of raid devices that raidframe can configure?

I am trying to set up a system with >8 raid devices.  However, I am getting the 
following:

        # raidctl -C raid8.conf raid8
        raidctl: Unable to open device file: raid8: Device not configured

The device files for partitions raid8a-raid8p all exist.  For example:

        brw-r-----  1 root  operator  18, 128 Sep 15 15:50 /dev/raid8a

I cannot find anywhere in the code that sets a limit on the number of raid 
devices, but perhaps I am not looking in the right places or for the right 
things.  I would appreciate guidance on this.
